Research findings

Who Stadsarchief acquired this drawing from is no longer known.

In July 1942, Stadsarchief purchased six drawings. This was noted in the log. Investigators have searched for a match with drawings in the present collection. Four of the six drawings have been identified. The drawing by J. Kops of Leidseplein Lock is recorded in the log as being by H.P. Schouten. It is not certain that House and lock at Kadijk (1756) by S. Fokke or P.C. la Fargue (the log states J. de Beijer) was part of this purchase. The drawing in the log which has not been found in the collection is by H.P. Schouten, Nieuwmarkt with Weigh House, sketch in India ink. The purchase is described in the log euphemistically as a direct purchase. The record is unusual in that the term used ('uit de hand gekocht') replaces the customary reference to the seller's name, albeit in the briefest form. It is odd that the seller's name does not appear. Indeed, the purchase itself is unusual, given the quality of the drawings. All this raises doubts about the circumstances of the sale. Stadsarchief has investigated the correspondence and financial records for additional information about the sale but without result. And no record of previous owners appears on the drawings themselves.
