Research findings

It is unclear who consigned this painting for sale at Mandelbaum & Kronthal auction in Berlin; only the initials KR remain.

This painting was auctioned at Mandelbaum & Kronthal in Berlin in February 1936. The auctioneers were a continuation of Internationale Kunst- und Auktionshaus which had been taken over in July 1935 in accordance with Germany's race laws. Dr Ernst Mandelbaum and Peter Paul Kronthal ran the auction house thereafter (see Angelika Enderlein, Der Berliner Kunsthandel in der Weimarer Republik und im NS-Staat, Akademie Verlag Berlin 2006). Consignor K.R. offered five paintings in all at this sale, of which two remained unsold. These were consigned at the next sale, on 19 May 1936, along with five more items from K.R. The provenance of all these works has been investigated, but the identity of K.R. remains unknown. Consignor no. 2336 offered several lots in sales at Leo Spik auction house in 1952; the consignor's identity is not known.
