Research findings

No information is available regarding who owned this bowl before it was acquired by the museum after the war.

A Hebrew inscription on the bowl states: Chevrah Kadisha Gemilut Chassadim SB, the name of a community burial society. The initials SB remain unexplained. Although this object was not part of the museum's prewar collection, those at the Central Collecting Point Offenbach in the American sector of Germany who sent it to Amsterdam thought that it was. They were responsible for collecting and returning Jewish ritual objects, books, manuscripts and archives stolen by Nazis on a massive scale during the war. Part of the museum's original collection was returned in 1946 via the Central Collecting Point in Offenbach. Some of the objects sent to the museum had not been part of the prewar collection or could not be identified in the prewar inventories. These are Jewish ritual objects from the Netherlands or elsewhere with no known provenance. These objects, including this funeral bowl, are published by the museum on its own website.
