Current restitution status

Restituted
: 2022: In 2013, the heirs of the former owners of Wassily Kandinsky's Bild mit Häusern applied for its restitution. The heirs and the Amsterdam municipality then jointly submitted the case to the Restitutions Committee for binding advice in the same year. In 2018, the Restitutions Committee ruled that the municipality was not obliged to restitute the painting. The heirs challenged this ruling and went to court. In 2020, the Kohnstamm Committee – appointed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to evaluate the restitution policy – published the report Streven naar rechtvaardigheid. Among other items, it recommended adopting a new assessment framework. In February 2021, the municipality endorsed the Kohnstamm Committee's conclusions and announced that it would enter into consultation with the heirs. The municipality and the heirs both deemed it plausible that in reassessing the application the Restitutions Committee would recommend restitution of the painting based on the earlier investigation of the facts and the new assessment framework. The municipality and the heirs subsequently reached a settlement, which led to the municipality returning the work of art on 28 February 2022.
2018: On October 22nd 2018 the Restitutions Committee has issued a binding opinion about the application for restitution of this painting by Wassily Kandinsky, currently in the possession of Amsterdam City Council. The Committee takes the view that the City Council is not obliged to restitute the work.

Research findings

This painting from the estate of a Jewish collector was auctioned at a Frederik Muller sale in Amsterdam in 1940.

Stedelijk Museum bought the painting on 9 October 1940 at a Frederik Muller & Co auction in Amsterdam. It is listed as Compositie, in the catalogue of 'Oude en Moderne Schilderijen, Acquarellen, Teekeningen, etc/Afkomstig van de collectie van wijlen J. Goudstikker/Diverse verzamelingen en nalatenschappen'. This lot number was from 'Nalatenschap L., Amsterdam'. The Jewish owner had inherited the work in 1930 from her husband, who had purchased it in 1923 from van Paul Citroen, who had given it on consignment to J.H. de Bois art gallery in Amsterdam.
