When and how this painting came into the possession of the museum is no longer known; it may have been a camouflaged form of safekeeping rather than a gift.

Nothing appears on the inventory card completed in 1951 to explain the acquisition apart from the current ownership. No further information appears on an earlier inventory card, dated 11 October 1943. Subsequent investigation provided no additional information.
