When and from whom Jacob Muller & Co acquired this painting by Maris is no longer known.

Jacob Muller & Co of The Hague bought this painting in December 1943. Although the art gallery's receipt in the museum archive suggests that this was a reputable firm, a search in various archives and contemporary newspapers reveals no information about the gallery. The deal may have been the work of an opportunist taking advantage of the highly lucrative art market during the war.
