Research findings

This painting was part of the collection confiscated from H. Fraenkel, a Jewish photographer from Amsterdam.

On 9 April 1946, Stichting Nederlands Kunstbezit received a claim on behalf of Hieronijmus Fraenkel of Amsterdam for this painting by Montpassant [sic]. The form describes how the Fraenkels were ordered in 1943 to deliver the painting to Lippmann, Rosenthal & Co, the bank entrusted with the theft of Jewish assets. It was later sold to Kunsthaus Lempertz in Cologne. Hieronijmus (Jerôme) Fraenkel (22-5-1877 - 15-1-1943) was a photographer, like his father and uncle, from whom he learned his trade. With his wife was Jaantje Simon de Jong, he ran a photo shop at Eerste van Swindenstraat 33 in Amsterdam. Hieronijmus died in 1943 in his native Amsterdam. Jaantje was deported to Sobibor and was killed there on 16 April 1943. Their only son David Fraenkel was also killed with his wife and two children in Sobibor. The museum is in contact with the possible rights holders.
