Research findings
Who consigned this painting to Paul Brandt auction house in Amsterdam in 1943 is unclear, as is the identity of the previous owner.
The Mak van Waay Schilderijen, aquarellen en drawings uit de collectie J.M.P. Glerum catalogue (Amsterdam, 28 February 1933) lists the painting as 'Cabaret-podium met accompagnateur'. A penciled comment in the right margin of an annotated copy of the catalogue states: 'Brand'. This may indicate Paul Brandt himself, in which case Brandt may have bought the painting in 1933 and sold it at his own auction house in 1943. Alternatively, it may have returned to Paul Brandt in 1943, which raises the question of the identity of the previous owner.
