Research findings

Who owned this painting before it passed to Nederlands Beheersinstituut is not known.

The painting may have been part of property confiscated from Germans after the war. In 1947, the Winterswijk representatives at Nederlands Beheersinstituut's Bureau Roerende Goederen van Vijanden en Landverraders passed various paintings on to Stichting Nederlands Kunstbezit. It is unclear whether this painting was part of that transaction. Inscribed on the reverse of the stretcher is the text: 'Vlag van Vlissingen? Rood-Wit' (Flag of Flushing? Red-White).
