Research findings

When and from whom Paul Zwaal acquired this painting is no longer known.

A comment pencilled in the margin of an annotated copy of the catalogue accompanying S.J. Mak van Waay's Oude en moderne schilderijen, antiquiteiten uit verschillend Nederlandsch kunstbezit sale on 6 April 1943 in Amsterdam states: 150,-; co.; x. Mak van Waay's record of consignors shows that this painting was offered together with thirty others by Paul Zwaal. Paul Zwaal was an art dealer on Willemsparkweg in Amsterdam. The painting was bought by 'Leeuwenberg' and was this person's only purchase at the sale, possibly on behalf of the museum. Investigation has not revealed who owned the painting before it was acquired by Paul Zwaal.
