Research findings

This painting probably belonged to a Jewish collector who felt compelled under the wartime conditions to sell some of his paintings.

The former owner of the painting fled from Berlin to the Netherlands in 1938. In 1943, he was forced to go into hiding. Early in the 1940s he had been forced to sell paintings from his collection to meet his everyday expenses. Some were sold through Jacques Goudstikker's art gallery, then directed by Alois Miedl, a German. The museum is in contact the heirs of the Jewish collector.
