This painting is from the prewar collection of Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker.
This painting was part of art dealer Jacques Goudstikker's collection. It was in Goudstikker's possession at the outbreak of the Second World War. Alois Miedl, who took over the art gallery when Goudstikker fled, consigned the work for sale at a Frederik Muller auction on 8 and 9 October 1940. Goudstikker died in an accident while fleeing the country on 16 May 1940. C. Croes had worked at Jacques Goudstikker's gallery before it was taken over by Alois Miedl. When the latter liquidated the gallery Croes received 25,000 guilders, of the 400,000 guilders he distributed among the staff. Being familiar with Goudstikker's collection, Croes had the foresight to buy the work at auction on 8 October 1940. It remained in the family's possession until R. Croes donated it to Gemeentemuseum in September 1980. The museum is in contact with the heirs.
