Research findings

When and from whom Countess R.A. of Bussum acquired this painting is no longer known.

Countess R.A. probably refers to Rudolphine Auersperg, an Austrian by birth who moved to the Netherlands, to a villa on Brediusweg in Bussum. On 31 May and 1 June 1944, much of her estate was auctioned at her house. Why she decided to sell is unclear. She and her partner, from India, with a British passport, had an ambivalent reputation during the war.
