The provenance of this painting is inconclusive. It is unknown who brought the painting to the Christie’s, Mason & Woods auction in July 1939. What is known is that art dealer P. de Boer sold the painting to dr K. Martin in Karlsruhe in 1943. Dr Martin was director of the Museum Karlsruhe. No evidence has been found to suggest that this transaction involved involuntary loss of ownership.
