Research findings
There is no, or insufficient provenance information known about this object from the period 1933-1945. After investigation, no sources have been found to date that can provide information to complete its provenance in the period. Therefore, no conclusions can be made regarding possible suspicious provenance or involuntary loss of ownership.
The provenance is therefore inconclusive: it is not known how, when or under what circumstances private collector Ball acquired this painting. What is certain is that Kunsthandel P. de Boer, Amsterdam, purchased the painting from Ball in June 1941 and sold it to the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf in October 1941. After the war, De Boer stated that it was a voluntary sale.
