The provenance is inconclusive. It is unknown how, when, or under what circumstances the private collector J.H. der Kinderen-Besier from Amsterdam acquired the painting. On 23 December 1941, Der Kinderen-Besier sold the work to Kunsthandel Hoogendijk, Amsterdam. On 10 December 1942, Hoogendijk sold the painting to Dr K. Martin, director of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe.
