After investigation, no sources have been found to date that can provide information to complete its provenance in the period. Therefore, no conclusions can be made regarding possible suspicious provenance or involuntary loss of ownership.
The provenance research is inconclusive: it is not known how, when or under what circumstances Kkunsthandel Van Diemen in Amsterdam acquired this painting. Nor is it known how, when or under what circumstances the private collector Van Regteren Altena in Amsterdam acquired this painting. Van Regteren Altena sold the painting to kunsthandel P. de Boer in August 1942, and De Boer sold it to Dr Hupp for the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf in November 1942.
