Research findings
From the provenance research into the period 1933-1945, indications have emerged that suggest possible involuntary loss of ownership.
The provenance information is incomplete. This object was examined in conjunction with other purchases made by Galerie Zinckgraf in Munich. Of the eleven NK works, seven show indications of potentially problematic provenance, including inscriptions of addresses and of Jewish names. It is unknown when this specific object was acquired by Galerie Fleischmann in Munich. It is also unclear who "M.E." was, the person who consigned the painting to the Hahn auction house in Frankfurt am Main. The object was purchased by Hermann Göring (Berlin) during the Hahn auction. The painting was later used by Göring in a trade for a Vermeer via Goudstikker/Miedl (Amsterdam), with Hofer (Berlin) acting as an intermediary. The internal declaration form states that the sale from Goudstikker/Miedl to Schneller in Bad Tölz was voluntary.
