There is no, or insufficient provenance information known about this object from the period 1933-1945. After investigation, no sources have been found to date that can provide information to complete its provenance in the period. Therefore, no conclusions can be made regarding possible suspicious provenance or involuntary loss of ownership.
The provenance of the painting is unknown. It is unclear how, when and under what circumstances the private collector A.V. Scully from London acquired the painting. Nor is it known how, when and under what circumstances the art dealer De Haan from Amsterdam came into possession of the work. What is certain is that the painting was sold by De Haan to the Goudstikker/Miedl art dealership in Amsterdam in July 1940. The Restitutions Committee has ruled that this transaction should be regarded as a regular art trade (RC: 1.106; 4.142). In August 1941, the painting was offered for auction by Goudstikker/Miedl at the H. Lange auction house, but it was not sold there. In 1943, the painting was sold by Goudstikker/Miedl to the Wallraf-Richartz Museum. This transaction is also considered to be a regular art transaction.
